From our beginnings advising advertisers on only TV and radio, Schlegel Advertising has evolved into a media buying and digital advertising agency that handles everything from TV and radio to social media, Google, and everything in between. The Owner
Joel was exposed to Sales & Advertising early in life when he would get to join in on client meetings with his father. During summers in high school, Joel worked at WECT TV-6 as a news videographer and studio cameraman. After attending Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, North Carolina, Joel joined the U.S. Air Force as a Contracting Specialist.
After Joel served eight years in the Air Force, Joel returned to Wilmington and worked at WWAY TV-3 as a part-time weekend news videographer. When he became a full-time employee, he worked in news production as a teleprompter operator and cameraman. After a few years working at WWAY, Joel started his own photography business, married his wonderful wife Anne, and then joined his father at Schlegel Advertising in 1994.
Joel is an Eagle Scout, Bronze Palm and a member of The Order of the Arrow. He is a Charter Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 11817 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. He enjoys golfing, camping, scuba diving, traveling, reading and spending time with his three cats. He is a fan of Syfy, especially Star Trek & Star Wars!

About the Founder

Joe Schlegel is a Castle Hayne native. He graduated from New Hanover High School and afterward he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He went on to graduate from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He was employed as Manager with Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service in New Hanover County as the Assistant Manager with Pitt County ASCS and was promoted to Manager of Wayne County ASCS.
Due to his love of the television industry, he pursued this interest as General Sales Manager for WECT and later became President and CEO of WWAY. Upon retirement, he established Schlegel Advertising Agency in 1992, and his son, Joel, joined the family business in 1994.
Joe was a devout Catholic and served as Chairman of the Building Committee at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. He was incredibly involved in the community. He was a former Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus, Farm Bureau Board of Directors, member of the Optimist Club, Cape Fear Men’s Club, and founding member of the Castle Hayne Classic Golf Tournament. Joe adored his family, he loved playing poker with his friends, enjoyed traveling and never met a stranger. On weekends, he was a Gentleman Farmer, growing grain on his own Schlegel Farms in Castle Hayne, North Carolina.
Joseph Anthony Schlegel passed away on September 13, 2016, and is greatly missed every day. His son Joel, continues his legacy and loves to share great stories of him and his father.
